Hi and welcome to this week’s look at what’s making headlines in natural health on iHealthTube.com.
Vitamin D is one of the most popular supplements in this country… but people taking it may not know that it might not be doing anything or it may even be causing harm without something else!
A recently published review found that vitamin D can’t be metabolized without enough magnesium. In fact, the co-author of the review said that without enough magnesium… vitamin D is not really useful or even safe. Consumption of vitamin D can increase a person’s calcium and phosphate levels, even if they’re still vitamin D deficient. That could lead to vascular calcification if magnesium levels aren’t high enough.
It’s estimated that only half the US population gets enough magnesium in their diet. The recommended daily allowance is 420 milligrams for males and 320 milligrams for females.
There is yet another reason this week to try and incorporate fish into your diet.
A recent study is indicating that eating fish at least once a week or eating fish one to three times a month in addition to taking fish oil supplements may be linked to a reduced risk of multiple sclerosis. The study examined the diets of over 11 hundred people… and showed that high fish intake was associated with a 45 percent reduced risk of MS.
The study suggests that omega-3 fatty acids may play a role in reducing MS risk, in addition to a number of other previously reported benefits. Fish like salmon, lake trout and albacore tuna are typically recommended sources of omega-3s.
Finally a recent study in France is indicating that alcohol use disorders are the most common preventable risk factors for the onset of all types of dementia.
57 thousand cases of early- onset dementia were studied and 57 percent were related to chronic heavy drinking… which is defined as consuming more than 60 grams of pure alcohol on average per day for men and 40 grams per day for women. The co-author added that on average… alcohol use disorders shorten life expectancy by more than 20 years… and that dementia is one of the leading causes of death for these people.
