Hi and welcome to this week’s look at what’s making news in natural health on iHealthTube.com…

A warning for those who take iron supplements… two common iron compounds may be doing just the opposite of what you’re intending.

Research out of the UK looked at ferric citrate and ferric EDTA… both are common iron compounds often found in iron supplements.  Both caused an increase in a biomarker for cancer when normal supplemental doses were tested on cultured human colon cancer cells… and according to one of the lead authors… these compounds may be carcinogenic.

The research also looked at ferris sulphate… another common iron compound and found no effect.  That lead author also cautioned that many iron supplements and suppliers don’t state which kind of iron compound is present in the product.

Looking to just feel a little better?  Raw fruits and vegetables just might be a key.

According to research out of New Zealand found that eating those things raw instead of cooked, canned and processed, might be a boost to your mental health.  The study looked at 400 adults aged 18-25 and found that consumption of raw fruit and vegetables were associated with lower levels of mental illness symptoms like depression and improved feelings of wellbeing and positive mood.

Some of the top raw foods related to better mental health were carrots, bananas, apples, dark leafy greens like spinach… citrus fruit, berries and cucumber.

Finally most of us know the importance of quality and quantity of sleep, but a recent study is showing a connection to sleep deprivation and a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease.

The small study out of Maryland's the one of the first to show that losing just one night of sleep can lead to an immediate increase in beta-amyloid plaques… a protein that’s been associated with Alzheimer’s.  Beta-amyloid is a wast product present in the fluid between brain cells.  In Alzheimer’s… it clumps together and impacts communication between neurons.  In the study… researchers found beta-amyloid increases about 5 percent after losing a night of sleep.

In Alzheimer’s… beta-amyloid is thought to be elevated by about 43 percent compared to healthy older adults.
