Hi and welcome to this week’s look at headlines in natural health in iHealthTube.com.

Sunscreen may help protect you from the sun… but earlier this week, the state of Hawaii became the first to ban certain sunscreen chemicals because of their threat to coral reefs.

The ban goes into effect in 2021 and will include sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate.  Both chemicals filter UV rays… but a nonprofit scientific organization also found that  the chemicals cause bleaching, deformities, DNA damage and ultimately death in coral after it’s washed off people in the water.  One of the chief scientists backing the ban, said the chemicals also lower the coral’s resilience to the impact of climate change.

A healthy diet can do many things for our health… now a new scientific review is showing how beneficial it can be for our eyesight as well.

The review looked at 18 high-quality studies and showed that diet may affect risk of development and progression of age-related macular degeneration.  Both the Mediterranean and Oriental diet were linked to a decreased risk of AMD where a typical Western diet and an increased association with AMD.

Consuming vegetables rich in carotenoids as well as fatty fish was also shown to be beneficial for those at risk of macular degeneration.

And finally fasting is showing another potential benefit… this time for people with multiple sclerosis.

Research out of St. Louis will start a study on humans based on results of a similar study on mice.  That study had mice with MS-like symptoms fast every other day.  Other mice were allowed to eat freely.  Those that fasted were less likely to develop signs of MS damage, like difficulty walking, limb weakness and paralysis.

The mice study also found that the fasting mice had a more diverse micro biome and more of the probiotic bacteria, Lactobacillus… which has previously been linked to milder MS symptoms.
