Scott: You mentioned Monsanto a couple times. When it comes to GMO, why are they the focus, why does Monsanto get the target on them? Are there other companies doing this or are they just the ones who started it? Why is it them?
Jeffrey Smith: There are six genetically modified food companies, that make crops that are genetically engineered. And Monsanto owns about 90 percent of the patents out there. Lets say it this way, 90 percent of the GMOs out there, are owned by Monsanto, are patented by Monsanto. They are the real aggressor, they're the bully on the block. They manipulated the US government. For example, the current FDA policy claims that the agency's not away of any information showing that GMOs are significantly different. And therefore, no safety studies and no labeling is necessary. Companies like Monsanto that told us that agent orange, PCPs and DDT were safe, and lied about it, can determine on their own if their GMOs are safe, and put on the market without telling the FDA or consumers. Now the person in charge of policy at the FDA when that policy was created, was Monsanto's former attorney Michael Taylor. Later Monsanto's vice president, now back at the FDA as the US food safety czar. And the sentence that the agency wasn't aware of differences, is a complete lie. Seven years after that policy came out, documents were made public from the FDAs own files, because of a lawsuit, revealing that the overwhelming consensus among the scientists working at the FDA, were that GMOs were different and dangerous. They listed allergens, toxins, new diseases and nutritional problems as potential dangers of GMOs and urged their superiors to require testing and complained about the policy when it was shown to them.
GMO expert Jeffrey Smith discusses how Monsanto became a leader in genetically modified foods. He explains why the company is continually a target for backlash and how it continues to have close ties with those in powerful government positions.
