Hi and welcome to this week’s look at what’s making headlines in natural health on iHealthTube dot com.

For so many years we were told to avoid or reduce fat in our diet.  Now more research is showing the very opposite might be better.

The results of a recent mouse study in California surprised even the lead author.  The results showed a 13 percent increase in median life span for mice that were on a high fat versus high carbohydrate diet.  That would equate to about 7 to 10 years in humans.  But the results also showed that those mice also retained quality of health later in life.  The high fat, or ketogenic diet shifts the body from using glucose as the main fuel source to fat burning and producing ketones for energy.

The results also showed the ketogenic diet increased memory and motor function in the mice.

More good news for those of you who like your coffee!

New research is showing that a substance in coffee could help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.  Some studies suggest drinking three to four cups of coffee a day can reduce the risk.  Initially… scientists thought caffeine was responsible for the benefits… but new research found that a compound called ‘cafestol’ increased insulin secretion in pancreatic cells when exposed to glucose.

And cafestol also increased glucose uptake in muscle cells just as effectively as a commonly prescribed anti diabetic drug.

And finally… another warning for expecting mothers… New research is showing an increased risk with using antidepressants during pregnancy.

Between 2 and 8 percent of pregnant women are on antidepressants… A study in Denmark that looked at almost a million children born between 1998 and 2012.

The results showed that the number of children who were later diagnosed with psychiatric disorders occurred almost twice as often if their mother started antidepressants during pregnancy than those who were never exposed in the womb.  There was also a significant increase in children with psychiatric disorders in the groups of mothers that stopped antidepressants before pregnancy and those who were taking them before and during pregnancy compared to those who were not exposed.
